Using VoIP Numbers for SMS 2FA

The industry standard for sending 2FA over SMS is to send to cell phones only. In fact, many companies that require 2FA to access their sites and services will not send 2FA codes to SMS enabled VoIP numbers, as they often have or allow shared access and are considered a security risk.

To ensure that you always receive the 2FA codes you need to effectively run your business, we recommend one of the following:

• Authenticator apps (where possible) — these are the most secure methods for 2FA.
• Cell numbersassociated directly with a named account — where authenticator apps aren't possible.

These steps will allow you to receive the 2FA codes in a secure and timely manner while preventing issues with companies who won't send those codes to SMS enabled VoIP numbers.
