Fix “Mango Voice can’t install updates on this Mac”
If you see any of the following, this article will help:
- A message that says “Mango Voice can’t install updates on this Mac”
- An orange banner at the top of Mango Voice that says “The app can’t install updates on this computer because of how it was installed”
- A password prompt every time Mango Voice updates, saying “Mango Voice is trying to add a new helper tool”
Why this happens
Mango Voice updates itself automatically, but only if your Mac account has permission to change the app. That permission is usually missing when the app was installed by someone else, such as your IT team, a device-management tool, or a different account on the Mac. Without it, your Mac asks for an administrator password with every update, and the problem comes back with the next update even if you enter the password.
The fix takes about a minute and only needs to be done once.
How to fix it
You’ll need to be an administrator on the Mac. If you aren’t, send this page to your IT team.
- 1
Quit Mango Voice. Click Mango Voice in the menu bar, then click Quit Mango Voice.
- 2
Open Terminal. Press Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return.
- 3
Paste this command and press Return:
sudo chown -R "$USER":staff "/Applications/Mango Voice.app" - 4
Enter your Mac password when asked, then press Return. Nothing will appear on screen as you type. That’s normal.
- 5
Reopen Mango Voice. Future updates will install automatically, without asking for a password. The message and orange banner will go away the next time Mango Voice checks for updates.
Still seeing the message? Delete Mango Voice from your Applications folder, then download the latest version. Open the downloaded file and drag Mango Voice into the Applications folder yourself.
For IT teams
Mango Voice updates in place, so the person who uses the Mac must own /Applications/Mango Voice.app. If the app is owned by root or another account (for example, after installing it with sudo, a setup script, or device management), every update asks for an administrator password.
To prevent this on Macs you set up, do one of the following:
- Let each employee install Mango Voice themselves by dragging it from the download into Applications.
Make the employee the owner as the last step of setup:
sudo chown -R <username>:staff "/Applications/Mango Voice.app"
